COOLANT®– or dry ice, is carbon dioxide in the solid state. It is created when liquefied carbon dioxide is decompressed below triple point. Around 2.5 kg of liquefied carbon dioxide is converted into 1 kg of snow-like dry ice. The product thus received, appropriately pressed to form blocks or granules, has multiple and diverse applications.
It is offered in the following forms:

  • 10 kg blocks,
  • 3 mm or 16 mm pellets.

COOLANT® is loaded into thermally insulated containers of varied capacities or directly into lorries.

Transport of dry ice is not subject to regulations governing the carriage of dangerous materials. Dry ice should be transported in vehicles where the driver's cab is fully isolated from the cargo space.

Properties of COOLANT®:

  • Dry ice sublimes (changes its state from solid directly into gaseous) at the temperature of -78.5 st.C.
  • Direct contact may cause frostbites – protective gloves must be worn.
  • The sublimed gas is 1.5 times heavier than air.
  • COOLANT® is tasteless and odourless.
  • In contrast to water ice, no moisture is left after dry ice evaporates.
  • Upon its reaction with water, weak acid is formed and the sublimation rate increases.
  • Dry ice inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi.
  • It is non-flammable and non-toxic; however, in contained space, sublimed gaseous carbon dioxide displaces oxygen from the air, and consequently may pose a threat of suffocation.
  • The high sublimation heat renders dry ice 3.3 times better as a coolant than water ice. Its additional advantage is the absence of liquid phase: having drawn energy from refrigerated material, dry ice evaporates leaving no residue.

COOLANT® should be stored in dedicated insulated containers, in ventilated rooms. It should be protected against heating.
