Hydrogen is used for the synthesis of basic products in the chemical industry, such as: hydrogen chloride, methanol, synthetic petrol, ammonia, and for the organic syntheses of hydrogenation reactions. It is also used in welding technology, glasswork and metallurgy.

Packing and transportationSee more

  • Requirements for storage structures:
  • Local exhaust ventilation, and general room ventilation,
  • Protection against static electricity,
  • The sprinkler system to cool down cylinders with sprayed streams of water in case of fire,
  • The electrical, lighting and ventilation installations made in the EX standard,
  • The room should be cool and dry.

StorageSee more

  • Storage is only allowed in storage facilities allocated for storing extremely flammable gases,
  • Keep in pressure containers (cylinders) which meet the requirements of Technical Supervision, vertically; cylinders must be protected against falling down,
  • Keep away from sources of heat and ignition,
  • Whilst in storage do not allow the temperature to exceed 50°C,
  • Keep away from oxidising gases and other oxidising substances,
  • Store containers / cylinders should be tightly closed,
  • The stored containers should be checked regularly for general condition and leak-tightness,
  • Store and open containers carefully. HYDROGEN STRONGLY HEATS UP DURING DECOMPRESSION, WHICH MAY RESULT IN SPONTANEOUS IGNITION,
  • Containers and tanks must be properly marked,
  • Containers must not be stored under conditions which are conducive to corrosion,
  • Portable fire extinguishing equipment should be available in the room.
  • “No smoking and no open fire” signs should be placed in the storage areas
